Our facilitator Ms. Alvarez, has introduced us, some Models such as Hilda Taba, Ralph Tyler’s Model and Kerr Operational Model. Let us begin by having a clear concept of what is Curriculum. Although there are many definition to that word , Ralph Tyler says that it is ’’ the planned and guided experiences and intended learning outcomes formulated through the systematic reconstruction of knowledge and experiences under the auspices of the school, for the learners continuous and willful growth in personal social competence.”  Taba says that Models serve as “guidelines to action.” Taba believes that the curriculum should be designed by the teacher rather than others. Her Model is teacher approach. Her model has an inductive approach. The needs of the students are at the fore front to the curriculum.
On the other hand Tyler’s Model is one of the best know models. He gathers data from the learner (the needs of the learner), subject matter (the nature and structure of knowledge), and Life outside the school (the needs of the society)
Kerr believes that the curriculum process is a very complex set of activities and decisions and they interact a lot. (Objective, content, learning experiences and evaluation)

Very interesting and educational, to know about all the different models. I can honestly say I have learnt a lot on this course given by Ms. Carla.

  2. I like ur intro Ara. I did a little research on what is curriculum planning and I like this definition. " is the decision making process about the content and the organization of learning for which the school is responsible." I think that the individual school must make sure that the content of the curriculum they are using is relevant to the students and their society.

  3. True Anita, I agree with you, that it should be relevant to the student and their society. Hence, I like Tyler's models and i can see why he is the best model, since he gathers data from the needs of the students, from the subject and and also from the needs of the society. If we would have curriculum like that, I believe we will have more passes than failures.

  4. Araceli, I like the way you summarize Tyler, Kerr and Taba’s model. I also remember that we said that in Tyler’s model, steps are followed in a sequence or liner model while in Kerr’s model it does not follow a linear model instead the process is very complex and that activities interacts a lot. Looking at Taba’s model I can say I really like the way her inductive model works; not only because this is a student centered model but also because it allows a higher order of thinking in students. She also believes that students can be led towards making generalizations through concepts. Taba also believes that we can teach students how to think. This could stand as one of my personal philosophies too. Human beings have the ability to learn new things and follow concepts and construct their own knowledge,so I like this model very much.

  5. Good evening Ladies! I apologize for not commenting on the blog earlier. this week is a busy week for me. I like your introduction Ms. Araceli; it is true we have learn't a lot in Ms. Carla class. Anita I also remember about that Tyler's model is basic steps in the curriculum development meaning a liner model. While Kerr is a process that is a very complex set of activities and decisions. On the other hand, Hilda Taba also believed educational curriculum should focus on teaching students to think rather than simply to regurgitate facts. According to Taba, there is a process for what educators should teach and how they can accomplish desired student outcomes. In order for teachers to teach effectively, they need to understand the three levels of knowledge. Taba lists them as facts, basic ideas and principles, and concepts.

  6. Hilda Taba was and continue to be an inspiring educator. She encourage students to think in the higher level and focus on the teacher being the mediator or facilitator rather than the lecturer. I can really see the importance taking the student needs, community needs and the relevance in the subject to develop a curriculum. I also realize that developing a curriculum is not an over night thing, it is a process to follow:
    Diagnosing the Needs
    Formulating Specific Objectives
    Selecting Content
    Organizing Content
    Selecting Learning Experiences
    Organizing Learning Experiences
    Evaluating
    Checking for Balance and Sequence

  7. That's true what your saying Ana. We all know that planning a curriculum to fit the needs of students is very important. We must try to have our best to have a curriculum that is relevant to their society. I think all models of curriculum planning that we have covered in class is unique and special in their own way. Some models are more rigid than others. I believe that to have a good curriculum we need to include a little bit from each of these models. For example: Robert Hutchins (Perennialism) model teaches students how to think, it teaches concept and focuses on knowledge. Looking at William Bagley ( Essentialism) model teaches morals and values and is a little strict, something that we still need in classrooms today. When it comes to John Dewy (progressivism) model it is student centered and deals with getting students ready for the world. This model also produces analytical thinkers. In the reconstructions model it is also student ccentered it is based on looking more on society and how we can go about fixing problems in the society. It deals with preparing students for future. As you can see these are all positive things that we can retrieve from each of these models to create a good and relevant curriculum.

  8. The truth is that when I got to learn about all these models I started to look at myself and try to in what category I fell into. I saw myself more like William Bagley since I always wanted my students to be seated in straight rows, no talking while I'm teaching or while they are working, more teacher centered than student centered and very strict. I realized that that was not the way to go. My class needs to be more student centered and I needed to allow a lot of critical thinking happening in the classroom. So I have seen my way of teaching changed since taking this class with Me Carla. In think she has done a great job in enlightening us on these models.

  10. I agree with you Anita, just like how there are different Models, there are different philosophies. I personally believe that we need to have a Curriculum with more than one philosophy. I like part of the Essentialist philosophy of Bagley. Whereby we need to teach students the most essential or basic academic knowledge and skills and character development. Essentialists believe that teachers should try to embed traditional moral values such as respect for authority, perseverance, fidelity to duty, consideration for others. That is to where I agree with that philosophy. Essentialists argue that classrooms should be teacher-oriented. The teachers or administrators decide what is most important for the students to learn with little regard to the student interests. I believe that if we chose to be teachers is because we love to work with teens. Being in a classroom is more than a teacher, we become parents, doctors, counsellors, and much more to students. We need to have our students at heart, since we are there because of them. Brad Henry says “A good teacher can inspire hope, ignite the imagination and instill a love of learning” With that perspective in mind I like the Child Center Curriculum. Dewey Progressivism philosophy is anchored on the needs and interest of a student. The Curriculum is center on the needs, experiences, interests, and abilities of students. Progressivisms believe that education should be a process of ongoing growth, not just a preparation for becoming an adult. In addition, students solve problems in the classroom similar to those they will encounter in their everyday lives.

  13. Before coming to do this course I did not have a clue about any philosophies of teaching or about models of curriculum it has also been an enlightening for me and as you all mentioned it also makes me see my students from a different perspective. That is why I don't understand the behavior some so-called trained teacher have with students. It seems like training did not make a difference to them. They are there to terrorize and intimidate the students. As far as i know now , it shloud make you a better teacher. I wonder what model they use.

  14. I got carried away for a moment but it truly annoys me I think because I am living it with my boys. The are afraid to approach certain teachers. Anyway back on track, I am not inclined towards one model. All of them have a uniqueness in them but I believe that they are a foundation and must be used to address our specific school environment. I think that by themselves the models are incomplete and should be used to complement each other hence, that's the way I plan to use it, taking the good ideas, concepts and principles from the various models. I did not know that this idea had a name, it is called an eclectic model. I will share the meaning with you all.

  15. Summary

Looking through all our conversation I realize that we all agree on more or less the same things when it came to curriculum and philosophies. As we have seen there are many definitions to curriculum and many beliefs on creating a curriculum. Hilda, Taba and Tyler models all have a unique view when it. Comes to philosophies and curriculum. Developing a curriculum is not an over night thing, there is a process to follow especially since we have our students/future at stake. When it comes to the philosophies then we should try and retrieve what is best for our classrooms and our students and integrate it into our teachings today. Yes we have learnt so many things about curriculum and philosophies that will definitely help us make a positive change in our way of teaching and our students today.

  16. We live in an ever changing world and we can't be too rigid we need a some level flexibility and adapt to them. The idea with this approach is to strike a balance when applying it so it will take some training and I think some of all are already practicing some aspect of it.Although, the eclectic type has met some resistance because they claim it lacks discipline since the method of teaching is from different approaches it is gaining a lot of popularity. The main criticism of the eclecticism is that "it does not offer any guidance on what basis and by what principles aspects of different methods can be selected and combined." Stern (1983, p. 512), The eclectic method is composed of material gathered from
    various systems, doctrines, or sources.
Eclectic method simply utilizes the best of all educational models, tailoring that mixture to the individual child in order to best meet his needs
